Coastal Transmission System Upgrades

April 10, 2024

Construction underway

Construction has started for the Coast Transmission System’s Transmission Integrity Maintenance Capabilities Project. Initial construction activities have begun at several work locations within our facilities and rights of way across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. These activities include mobilizing equipment and materials, preparing work sites for construction, fencing, vegetation and tree clearing, preparing laydown, and staging areas and building access roads. Construction will generally be from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. We will be replacing segments of our gas lines, upgrading facilities, and installing sound enclosures to reduce operational disturbances to our neighbors. Minor traffic delays may be required to accommodate large trucks and will be monitored by traffic control personnel. Access to multi-use pathways may also be closed and advanced signage will be posted to keep the public informed. Closures will be minimized, and pathways will be reopened as quickly as possible when the location is safe for use.We appreciate your patience as we work to complete these activities safely and as quickly as possible. If you have any questions regarding the project, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or 604-592-7494.

BC Energy Regulator issues discharge authorization for treated water

We’ve received a Waste Discharge Authorization (WDA) from the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) to discharge treated water generated from tunnel construction activities at the BC Rail and Woodfibre LNG sites in Squamish. This authorization replaces the temporary approvals previously issued by the BCER, and allows us to carry out these activities for the duration of tunnel construction. All water generated through construction activities will be treated, prior to discharge, in accordance with the Environmental Management Act and to meet B.C. water quality guidelines. As part of the WDA, we are required to carry out sampling and monitoring activities, to ensure that the treated water meets the B.C. water quality guidelines. The findings from the sampling and monitoring program are published in weekly reports.

Mitigation plan under development following BCUC decision

In accordance with the BCUC’s decision on the Okanagan Capacity Upgrade Project, FortisBC is currently developing a mitigation plan to address an imminent capacity shortfall in the Okanagan region. The plan will examine potential short-term solutions to ensure customers’ energy demands are met in the event of a one in 20-year cold weather event occurring in the 2026/27 winter or subsequent period. FortisBC must file the plan with the BCUC by July 31, 2024. Updates on this process will be provided as they become available.
