Q&A: Do you offer financial assistance to install a solar panel?

For our electricity customers, we support the installation of solar panels through our net metering program.

Why do you offer financial assistance to insulate my home, but not a penny to install a solar panel?

Jennifer S. Burnaby

Thanks for your question, Jennifer.

In order to provide financial assistance to our customers in the form of an incentive or loan for an energy-efficiency upgrade, FortisBC must prove to the BC Utilities Commission that the upgrade is cost-effective.  To date, the costs of a solar photovoltaic panel (PV) system exceed the value of the energy produced over the lifespan of the PV panels.  However, as the cost of the panels decrease over time, this measure may become cost-effective in the future.

For our electricity customers, we support the installation of solar PV panels through our net metering program.  To date, 86 residential and commercial customers have installed a total of 535 kW of solar PV through this program. Additionally, more than 92 per cent of the electricity supplied by FortisBC comes from hydroelectric power sources.

For our gas customers we offer a variety of energy-efficiency rebates and the option to sign up for carbon-neutral renewable natural gas.
