Why this storage expansion project matters
The tank at our Tilbury facility holds natural gas in a liquid form, ensuring that the reserves are available. By expanding our LNG storage capacity, the Tilbury facility project will help us provide reliable gas service to our customers when demand is high. This includes service on cold days and during possible system disruptions.
“The BCUC’s approval is a major milestone.” shares Ian Finke, director LNG operations, FortisBC. “This project makes our energy system stronger and more reliable, helping us meet our customers’ current and future needs. It means we can continue delivering energy when it’s needed most.”
Greater capacity for the long term
The new tank at our facility in Delta, B.C. will replace the original 56-year-old storage tank, which has reached the end of its service life. Able to hold 3 billion cubic feet of equivalent natural gas, the new tank increases Tilbury’s storage capacity by approximately 2.5 times.
More storage means we’ll be ready to provide reliable gas service right now and as things change over time. It also allows us to manage any emergencies that may happen in the future. The regasification equipment will allow us to convert even more stored LNG back into natural gas because of expanded capacity and send it into the system during peak periods such as in colder weather.
Approval for the expansion is a part of our ongoing working relationship with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Indian Band. We signed an agreement in 2022 to work together toward developing a world-leading LNG facility. Achieving this milestone helps us stay on course.
What’s next?
This approval of our project makes way for next steps. Right now, our focus is on the Environmental Assessment process with the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office for the Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion project. Approval at this critical stage is required before construction can begin on the Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion project, which is part of Phase 2. Phase 2 also includes additional liquefaction equipment to produce LNG for marine fueling.
As we move forward, we’ll remain engaged with everyone involved. To help do that, we’ll continue to share updates and work closely with Indigenous Nations and local communities. The Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion Project is a key investment in B.C.’s energy future. It’s one that will help us ensure we have the energy we need when we need it most.
